I just read a book called Little Red’s Secret Sauce. It is a funny new twist on Little Red Riding Hood — but this time, Little Red makes her own super-spicy hot chili sauce! Here is my review. 🌶️

The characters

  • Little Red — She makes a delicious, spicy hot chili sauce.
  • Little Red’s Granny — She is old and sick, and needs some help.
  • The coyote — He is mean, greedy and lazy. He steals food from his neighbours, but what he likes most is tricking them into giving him their food, because he is too lazy to cook his own.

Where it happens

The story starts out in the desert, and later moves to Granny’s house.

The problem

The trouble starts when the coyote tricks Little Red into taking the longer route to Granny’s house. While she is gone, he locks Granny up and pretends to be her, so he can steal the special sauce that Little Red made just for her Granny. But the coyote makes a big mistake — he locks Granny in the toolshed, and she breaks right out using the tools inside! By the time Little Red gets there, Granny tells her everything that happened.

How it ends

Normally, Little Red only uses a tiny dash of her special hot chili sauce. But this time, to teach the greedy coyote a lesson, she poured the whole bottle of hot chili into the sauce! When the coyote gobbled it up, his tongue was burning so much that he started screaming for water. Granny was smart and did not eat that batch — she knew it was way too spicy! In the end, the coyote learned his lesson: never steal food from others. After that, he never tricked anyone again, and always made his own food.

What I think ⭐

I really liked this book because it is funny and clever. My favourite part is when Little Red uses her secret sauce to outsmart the coyote — she beats him with her brains (and a lot of spice!) instead of being mean. It teaches that being greedy and lazy gets you into trouble, and that it is better to make your own way than to take from other people. Two thumbs up from me!
